Know Your Food-Know Your Farmer Series: E1 Frost-seeding

February 15, 2019

We frost seeded a pasture mix from Rohrer Seeds yesterday before it warmed up. Frost seeding is broadcasting seed on the frozen ground while you let the freeze-thaw cycle work the seed into the soil. This is all preparation for converting a 3 acre triangle that used to be row cropped into pasture. Frost seeding can also be used to maintain a stand of pasture. If you want to add diversity or any one component is getting thin, frost seeding is a low input way to get it done. On small paddocks we just walk it off, but on larger ones you'll need to use a broadcast seeder mounted on some kind of vehicle.
